The government has tabled the findings of Board of Inquiry into historical child sexual abuse in Beaumaris Primary School and certain other schools, Wednesday 6 March

The Board of Inquiry into historical child sexual abuse in Beaumaris Primary School and certain other schools investigated the institutional respond to child sexual abuse involving multiple teachers at Beaumaris Primary School during the 1960s and 1970s. Sadly the abuse extended far beyond this one school and time. Today the government has tabled the Inquiry’s report.

SASVic made a formal submission to the Inquiry, attended the Inquiry and met with Counsel Assisting.

SASVic is well placed to comment on the findings of the Inquiry as we can provide a perspective on what needs to change systemically in relation to sexual assault in schools and across the community. We can provide an independent assessment of the government’s performance in this secotr in terms of funding, legislative reforms and more.

We can also explain why a community based response is vital after the incidents such as those that occured at Beaumaris Primary School.

Note: We are waiting for the delivery of the comprehensive 10-year Victorian Sexual Violence Strategy promised by the Victorian Government for 2022.

Sexual Assault Services Victoria (SASVic) is the peak body for the state’s 18 specialist sexual assault services.
